Joules Graphic Design

Currently working at the Joules concession in Beales Bournemouth and have been for getting on for four years now. Working in the shop on Sunday I thought how I really should blog about how talented the design team for Joules are. Ever since I started working for the company I have always been inspired greatly by the branding for the store. If anything it has made me realise how much I love design! The window displays, promotional displays, flyers, shop displays, website, posters, catalogues etc all have such a beautiful quality about them. I particularly love how they combine hand drawn images and text with perhaps more digital work. The photography combined with thin pen drawings with splashes of colour make Joules designs unique and memorable. Bright colours and prints are really what make Joules a much loved shop. The attention to detail is known for the clothing but I also think this is the case for the posters, displays etc in the shop too. This may sound bias as I work here but the shops visual merchandising and graphic design from print to web has always caught my eye. Studying visual communications at uni I guess maybe partly the reason, but I really do think as a shop the design and branding are great and really makes Joules stand out from the crowd!

PPRD2 Evaluation

This project has been all about coming up with an identity for myself. Logos, business cards, CV, Portfolio, and also linked with the website unit. I have to admit I found this hard because its been running alongside the website unit and the fmp at the same time. I think I have struggled with timing on this unit. Given and extra week or so with no other work to do apart from this I feel it would have been more beneficial and perhaps I would have been a lot happier with this project. Saying this I think this is an ongoing project and CV’s, portfolios etc will always be changing. I’m fairly happy with my logo at the moment but I’m still not 100% sure about it. I’m glad I decided against using my initials as using my full name works a lot better. Also you don’t hear the name Woon everyday so it definitely stands out! My logo is something I can look at again even over the summer and still develop. I have an online portfolio http://hayleywoon.carbonmade.com and also my website however this is not online. I printed out some of my projects and presented them how I think they should look in a portfolio. My CV and business cards resemble my logo with the colour scheme and the main font choice being Quicksand.

What an amazing project to be given the opportunity to re-design the packaging for the French perfume L’artisan. Being founded in Paris me and Samantha Hart who I worked with decided straight away between us that we would go to Paris for a few days to take inspiration and gather ideas. This being my first trip to Paris, I found it very beautiful and took many pictures. We documented our findings in a little book we created. This book shows what we saw, where we went, and our final decision to go down a theatrical design approach after visiting the Moulin Rouge. We worked hard on linking theatre shows with the emotion and scent of the four fragrances. I’m happy with what we chose- Swan Lake- elegant and dignified, Romeo and Juliet- Perfect sublime love, Moulin Rouge- Passion, sex and lust, Phantom of the Opera- fear and adrenaline. I think they all fit the emotions perfectly. Using colour schemes and drawings we created the packaging design using relevant props from each show to create a pattern that would be applied on the box. There would be a red curtain at the front of the box like you’re about to watch a show. When the box is opened it would reveal the perfume bottle like its centre stage. I think in a way our research and concept took longer than expected and we found when creating our actual packaging designs we were running short of time. Like working on logo, CV etc as well as fmp I think it was hard to juggle this project. In the end we got it done and although the designs themselves could be improved upon our main concept was the strong point.

FMP Evaluation

Having to create your own brief was at first quite a daunting prospect. There were so many options and routes to take; having no limits on what to do was quite a scary thing. Luckily for me I came up with my general idea at the start of the project. I first looked at quotes and sayings, they are used so frequently, many of them have hidden meanings and originate from hundreds of years back. It was interesting to research into sayings in more depth and to learn a little more about them. From there the quote which stood out to me was- ‘you learn something new everyday’. I think this was because I didn’t know how true this was. Do you really learn something new everyday?

I began documenting throughout the whole of March what I learnt each day. I wrote the fact in a sketchbook and where I found it e.g. newspaper, radio etc. I researched into memory techniques and in the end used different techniques each week of March to document what I learnt along with a little drawing. At the start of the project I wanted to make this more personal to me by having random and I guess unique facts that I found out throughout the day. However I realised this probably wouldn’t be something other people would want to read. I wanted the things I learnt to be quirky and maybe quite unusual, in the end I did learn some random things. By the end of March I had answered my question- do you learn something new everyday, my answer would be yes. Not all of them are shocking and unusual, but some make you smile, some make you laugh, some maybe boring and some maybe interesting.

I didn’t see this taking so much of an illustrative route but after having tutorials and presentations it was clear to see this would be the route i would need to take. I haven’t really had the opportunity to get back into drawing this year particularly, so it was nice to do some drawings. I’m happy with how they turned out as the drawings all had a link to one another. They were simple pen drawings that clearly showed what the thing I learnt each day was. Tutorials and presentations helped me with things like colour, type, layout, and what I actually wanted to produce. My final piece was a diary style book with the illustrations of what I learnt each day along with the fact and where it was found etc. I’m happy with the overall design. Its simple and to the point, I think its interesting and almost like a picture/fact/diary book all in one. The second piece I produced 12 small pictures within a frame. It had two functions, one- just to be a visually nice picture, and two- a calendar. I used the images I drew and added colour keeping to a pastel colour scheme and using the same font as my book so the to pieces linked. The images were held up in a frame with no glass by mini pegs, almost like they were on a washing line. The idea so you could turn each image around to have the calendar for each month, so had 12 images in total. I think the book turned out to be a stronger final piece this simply being because I spent a much longer time creating this and getting it right. The picture is almost like a gift. Its also relevant as this whole project was about documentation throughout the month so I thought a calendar would be very relevant.

I must admit I struggled with time, having saying this I did manage to do pretty much everything I wanted to do for hand in. I have found this project very self-motivating. Apart from advice from others there is no-one else to help you but yourself. It’s been so nice getting back into drawing and I have found my love with illustration again. I think this project worried me to start with as i wouldn’t class myself as an illustrator but have ended up producing a very much illustrative project. I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but its been nice to have a change and do something a little different. Its also made me think about what its going to be like this time next year when my work will actually count towards my degree. Although stressful I have very much enjoyed this project. The concept and final pieces are different and perhaps not something I would have seen myself necessarily doing, I have loved taking a more illustrative role in this project.

Just a few inspirational pictures taken from Pintrest. I get a lot of my ideas by looking on there as the images are a bit more quirky and creative. I got my idea of using a frame and pegs for my calendar/picture final piece from there. Love the type calendar idea on the image above and how each month uses a different colour theme.

This is 12 illustrations by Catherine Campbell for her calendar. I like the beautiful illustrations, they are so delicate and just beautifully drawn. Its nice how she has added more colour to some drawings and some she has just kept to black and white. I also like the square shape of each months artwork, as it doesn’t look like a typical calendar. Seeing this has given me more idea that I maybe should just produce a a years calendar like Catherine and pick out 12 of my month illustrations to produce a years calendar rather than just a March calendar.

Juana Medina combines these black pen drawings with food to create a unusual, humorous, and creative pen and food image. The talented artist has received awards for her many simple illustrations who tends to tell stories within her drawings. I like how the types of food she uses do resemble certain objects. I think her work is quirky and fun. I like how she uses one pen to create curved, sharp, thin and thick lines to give the drawings movement and character. The drawings are simple and use little colour but I think that makes it better as the food she uses stands out.

A few of my draft page designs for my book. I am debating whether to just keep it simple with the illustration and fact alone, or to have a more diary style with the day, time, and place I found out what I learnt. I have kept to my original line drawings and left them Black and White as this was recommend at the crit. (These are screenshots so not the best quality) :)

Again thanks to http://www.creativebloq.com/graphic-design/calendar-design-812541 I found some different calendar examples. These aren’t just your normal everyday calendars, they have been designed in all sorts of ways from pantone calendars, letterpress, pocket calendars, origami, and puzzle calendars to name a few. The link shows the full article. Its given me a better insight into different approaches I could take if I do decide to make a calendar as one of my final pieces.
